BUILDING ENERGY SIMULATION
The energy consumption of a building is a complex function of a vast number of interrelated processes. Some of these processes are weather dependent, others rigorously scheduled, and some are entirely random. For the design of an energy conscious building, estimates of this elusive sum are needed to guide design decisions. To date, the most accurate means of supplying these estimates is an hourby-hour computer simulation of the building, its occupancy, systems and components. In most design efforts, this tool is used sparingly, often only as a final check on the fully designed building, but it’s possible extend the usefulness of this tool throughout the design process, to provide specific information, economically and in a timely manner, relevant to each major design decision.
Improving building design and operation
As energy performance legislation becomes more stringent, it is necessary to better understand the way that our buildings behave.
Changes in building design and occupation affect the energy and thermal performance of buildings and building energy modelling enables a deeper understanding of the likely effects of these changes. Energy consumption and risk of overheating are particularly pertinent issues.
In new buildings, energy modelling should be carried out at an early stage of the design process in order to inform further development of the design and construction.
In existing buildings, modelling can help to evaluate and prioritise the options for reducing carbon emissions cost effectively.
The accomplishment of the energy simulation of the building allows:
- Collecting data on consumption, energy and production costs to improve the understanding of the factors that contribute to the variation of the energy indices of energy-consuming installations.
- Collecting the energy balances of the energy-consuming installations and of the enclosures and construction elements.
- Identify opportunity areas that offer potential for energy savings.
- Determine and economically evaluate the attainable savings volumes and the technically applicable measures to achieve it.
